Painted in 2013 during an extended period in Roswell, New Mexico, Ranch View Motel reflects Stewart MacFarlane’s ongoing engagement with the American landscape, a subject that has occupied a significant place within his practice over several decades. Having first attended the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program in the late 1980s, and returning on multiple occasions, MacFarlane developed a sustained connection to the region, culminating in a six-month stay in 2013 while preparing work for exhibitions in Sydney and Kuala Lumpur.
This work formed part of a larger body of paintings developed during this period and was later included in a regional touring exhibition, shown at Manning Regional Gallery, Broken Hill Regional Gallery and Perc Tucker Regional Gallery between 2018 and 2020. As such, Ranch View Motel sits within a well-documented phase of the artist’s practice, reflecting both his continued engagement with international subject matter and his distinctive approach to contemporary landscape painting.
