John Olsen’s move to Dunmoochin, the artists’ community established by Clifton Pugh at Cottles Bridge, Victoria, marked one of the defining periods of his career. Arriving in 1969, Olsen joined a remarkable community of artists that included Clifton Pugh, Fred Williams, John Perceval, Charles Blackman and Albert Tucker, immersing himself in an environment where painting, ideas and the Australian landscape became inseparable.

The landscape surrounding Dunmoochin profoundly influenced Olsen's work. Painted in 1969, the present work belongs to this important period of transition, capturing the beginning of Olsen’s engagement with the Victorian landscape and a chapter widely regarded as pivotal in the evolution of his distinctive vision of Australia. Twice awarded the Wynne Prize, and later the recipient of both the Sir John Sulman and Archibald Prizes, Olsen remains one of Australia’s most influential interpreters of the landscape.
