Painted in 2002, Flinders depicts the renowned rock pool at Ocean Beach on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. Illuminated by the fading light of dusk, white surf crashes against the dark shoreline while the geometry of the rock pool anchors the composition. Rather than recording a fleeting coastal view, Amor distils the scene into an image of remarkable atmosphere, where moonlight, sea and architecture combine to create a landscape that feels both real and strangely dreamlike.
A graduate of Melbourne’s National Gallery School, where he studied under John Brack, Rick Amor has established himself as one of Australia’s most respected contemporary painters. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he has produced a body of work encompassing landscape, architecture and the human figure, each united by an enduring fascination with light, memory and the emotional character of place. His achievements include the Wynne Prize (1999) and the Archibald Prize (2016), while his appointment as the Australian War Memorial’s Official War Artist to East Timor further reflects the esteem in which he is held. His paintings are represented in every major Australian public collection, securing his place among the leading figures of contemporary Australian realism.
