Included in John Coburn: Five Decades, the landmark retrospective presented at Sydney’s S.H. Ervin Gallery in 2004, The Wave was recognised as an important example of the artist’s career spanning half a century. Painted in 1970, it dates from the formative years in which Coburn refined the symbolic vocabulary of geometric forms and vibrant colour that became the hallmark of his work.
