The Australian landscape has remained at the centre of Idris Murphy’s practice for more than forty years. Rather than seeking topographical accuracy, his paintings distil the landscape into expressive passages of colour, light and gesture, capturing its atmosphere and emotional resonance as much as its physical form. Rooted in the traditions of Australian Modernism yet unmistakably individual, Murphy’s work reflects an enduring fascination with the spirit of place.

A graduate of Sydney’s National Art School, Murphy was awarded the Sulman Prize in 2007 and is represented in Australia’s leading public collections, including the National Gallery of Australia and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Through a career of sustained exploration and innovation, he has established himself as one of the country’s most respected interpreters of the Australian landscape.
